What do you think of them?
I have mixed views on them. I don't think they're all that bad, but then again both my mom and sister have competed in them, but it was never an obsessive thing - it was just something they liked to do.
However I find it creepy when little girls are prancing around in heavy make-up, having their hair bleached, teeth capped, etc - urg gives me nightmares just thinking about it.

I think beauty pageants are mostly an American thing. I mena we have them here but the whole thing isn't as big or as popular thank God.
It's ridiculous, honestly. They're exploiting little girls.

In england beauty Pageants aren't common either, The only one I know of is Miss England. I think it's taking away a girls childhood by exploiting them, and they end up look like a 13 year old at age 5!

Well, I dunno. I guess it depends on the individual going in to join. I mean, if they actually WANT to be there then I don't see a problem with it. However, some kids are just dragged by their parents to do the whole circuit and that's something I don't appreciate. I mean, some kids don't mind the attention and glamour but there are a couple that I think would probably prefer to be running in the mud otherwise.
I have to admit though, some of those child pageants have kids looking a little strange. Big, big hair and sparkly make up anywhere that isn't Vegas is just wrong. I have this thing about kids looking like kids and being spontaneous.
off topic: Weren't Lucy Hale and the Thompsons pageant kids? Cause there's something about the way they carry themselves that just implies that they've been to those contests.

I don't think little girls should compete; it teaches them from an early age that looking good is very important, and brains won't win you any trophies.

I think the only place that they are common is in America. I don't like them. I hate seeing little girls dressed up with all the make-up.
Yes Taylor and Tori Thompson and Lucy Hale were in them but I think it just helped their confidence. I still love them all and they didn't do too many of them anyway.

Cause there's something about the way they carry themselves that just implies that they've been to those contests. I agree. Honestly, not all pagants allow little girls to be caked in make-up and wear 'sexy' clothes. My mom judges pagents and in these there are rules that have to be followed, for instance the girls aren't even allowed to wear any make-up at all until they're at least 13! They aren't allowed to enter the swimsuit section until they're at least 16 and all the clothes are age appropriate. All the girls win something and the general idea is to make them feel like the stars they already are. I didn't realize that Lucy Hale did pageants though I knew Tori Thompson did some - there are some pictures on their official site and she looks okay in her pageant pics - she's not wearing too much make-up or wearing 'revealing' clothes or anything like that, neither are any of the other girls. I think the pageants she did were similar to the ones my mom judges as well as the ones my sister did when she was younger. However, I do think that some of the pageant moms do take it too far. There was a documentry called Living Dolls a couple of years ago and the way those little girls were dressed and the way their moms went on was just disgusting! The mom's were pushing them to win all the time to the point where a lot of the kids were crying. They were bleaching their hair and even some of them went as far as to have plastic surgery so they'd win

It was on youtube a while ago, it's where I watched it but the mods keep taking it down. It's been uploaded a few times but it always gets deleted. It sucks though, because I want to watch it again. It was interesting - in a creep scary kind of way. EDIT: I just realized I spelt pagaent wrong. Oh well.

As long as her parents are teaching her that looks aren't the most important thing & there's more to competing than just being 'beautiful' than pageants are just harmless fun. My cousin competed in them from when she was four until she was 12; she is now 16 & couldn't give a d**n about looks - she doesn't wear any make-up, doesn't style her hair, generally stays away from the 'popular' crowd at school & is a straight A honors student. They're made out to be a lot worse than they are.

I did two beauty pageants whne i was younger and it wasn't that bad from what i can remember . There are some girls which that heavy make up thing and bleached hair stuff and i do truly feel sorry for them . Just because you guys may have heard that about pageant contests doesn't mean everyone who competes turns out to be a self centered as most of you are trying to put out.

Just because you guys may have heard that about pageant contests doesn't mean everyone who competes turns out to be a self centered as most of you are trying to put out. Thank you for understanding what I'm trying to say. Seriously the media blows the whole thing way out of propotion & make it seem that all mothers of child beauty queens are pushy stage moms when it's not always like that at all. Of course I do realize that there are mothers that go to extreme legnths to make sure their little girls win - hair bleaching, piling on more make-up than even I as an adult wouldn't even wear - but it would be stupid to assume that all pageants are like that. Generally the 'tamer' pageants (aka the ones where the little girls aren't allowed to wear make-up until a certain age, etc) aren't forced down our throats by the media as much (if at all), so it's not really a surprise that people would assume that all pageants are really just 'exploiting little girls.' Take my cousin for example. She would be competing in a pageant one day & then playing with me, getting dirty in the mud, riding our bikes together & playing with our dolls, just everyday kid stuff the next day. She made lots of friends in the pageant world who were exactly the same. It's not like pageants ruled these kids lives or anything, it was just something they did for fun on the sideline like some kids play on a sports team or are in a drama club - but these kids did pageants. As I was saying before, I do not see the logic in 'pageants teach little girls that looks are the mst important thing'. Whether you believe that looks are the most important thing or not is all taught through upbringing & what your parents & people around you taught. Not because you competed in a few beauty pageants when you were a kid.
